FG Completes Work on N12bn Galma Dam



Work on the N12 billion Galma multipurpose dam in Kubau Local Government area of Kaduna State, has been completed, an official has said.

The Chairman, Board of Directors of the Upper Niger River Basin Development Authority, Sam Ode, said  in an interview after inspecting the dam that the project, awarded by the Federal Government, has a 250 million-litre reservoir and would supply water to the treatment plant that serves the Zaria City Water Scheme.



According to him, the dam will also be used to irrigate 2, 500 hectares of farm land in the adjourning areas and generate 2.5 megawatts of electricity.

``The dam will improve the quantity of water supply for both domestic and industrial purposes. ``It will improve agricultural activities like dry season farming and fish farming as well as improve power generation,” he said. Also speaking, the Managing Director of the River Basin, Prof. Paul Marley, said ``technically the Galma dam is 100 per cent completed and installations of the water machines would soon be commissioned for use,''.

Marley urged farmers to key into the irrigation scheme to improve best agricultural practice in Nigeria. Meanwhile, the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris appealed to the government to speedily complete the Zaria water supply project.

The royal father made the appeal when he received the directors in his palace in Zaria. ``We hope the inadequate water supply in Zaria and its environs would come to an end soon,” the Emir said. According to him, if the various government projects in Zaria are fully completed and inaugurated, it will solve the dearth of potable water being experienced in the ancient city.
